Donald R. Witmer

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts we share the peaceful passing of Donald R. Witmer, formerly from Millersville and Mount Joy, on Monday, September 7, 2026. He was 82 years of age. He was the son of the late Ivan and Irene Witmer and is survived by his sister, Verna Carpenter (Paul) and brother, Glenn Witmer (Dale), a nephew, Randy Witmer (LeAnn) and a niece, Jen Kroesen (Dean) and several cousins. Don graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1962. From there he went on to work at the Watt & Shand Department Store in downtown Lancaster. Afterwards he worked for RCA which eventually became Burle Industries. He operated Witmer’s Greenhouses and Produce of Mount Joy and became a familiar face at local farmers markets, Leola Produce Auction, Root’s Country Market and Auction, and many flea markets including Saturday’s Market and Green Dragon. He also served in the military during the Viet Nam war. Don was a highly recognized softball pitcher with several championships for Manheim in the Lanco Modified Softball League. He was also an avid bowler and regular participant in the Lancaster Senior Games, where he accrued many medals. In his youth Don attended Stehman E. U. B. Church where he embarked on his softball career and developed an interest in baseball as well. He was a season ticket holder concurrently for the Harrisburg Senators, Reading Phillies and Lancaster (Barn)Stormers for many years. Don was a past president of the Greater Millersville Jaycees and ultimately became a Jaycees International Senator, the highest award bestowed by that organization. In addition to his siblings, he will be deeply missed by friends and family who appreciated his great sense of humor, charm, and competitiveness. A private service of remembrance will be at the family’s convenience. Interment will be at Mellinger’s Union Meeting House and Cemetery, Stevens, PA. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for both the staff of Magnolias of Lancaster and Hospice &Community Care for their excellent care of Don.
