George T. Heidig

George T. Heidig, 80, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 8, 2017 in the company of his family. Born in Lancaster, PA, George was the son of the late J. Andrew and Louella Trout Heidig and the husband of Emma (Jean) Maser Heidig. They were married on June 16, 1963, recently celebrating their 54th anniversary. He graduated from Stevens College of Technology prior to graduating from Millersville University. He worked on his Master’s degree through Temple University. He proudly served his country with the United States Navy during the Korean War as a Radar Man for 4 years. George spent 30 years with the School District of Lancaster, working as an Industrial Arts teacher at Lincoln Junior High School. He also worked for Fred F. Groff, Inc., for 42 years assisting numerous families and services. He was an active member of the Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ where he served on the property committee as well as ushering teams, and Relay for Life team. He was a former member of 1st United Methodist Church in Millersville. He was a member of the Salvation Army where he served on the Board of Directors for 25 years and was involved with the Christmas programs. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association. He enjoyed spending winters in Bradenton, Florida, specialized in woodworking projects and loved to swim. Most of all his passion in life was his family as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He also enjoyed attending concerts and the theater as well as playing golf. He did volunteer work at Homestead Village. In addition to his wife, Jean, he is survived by two daughters, Dr. Kimberly Heidig Salata, wife of Dr. James Salata, Winchester, VA and Karen Heidig Longwater, wife of Dr. Adam Longwater, Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers, T. Andrew Jr., husband of Ethel Mae Heidig and James, husband of Barbara Heidig, both of Lancaster, PA, six grandchildren, Kathryn Salata, Elizabeth Salata, Allison Salata, Madison Longwater, Caden Longwater, and Reese Emma Longwater. A brother, William T. Heidig preceded him in death. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Heidig. Relatives and friends are invited to attend George’s Celebration of Life Memorial Service at the Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603 on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at11:00 a.m. with The Rev. Dave Longenecker, Chaplain at Homestead Village and Heather Giffen, Associate Pastor officiating. Private interment will be held at the Memorial Garden of the Church. Friends may call at the Church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be at the discretion of the family.
