Helen Duncan Almond

Helen Duncan Almond, 93, of Lancaster, PA, went to her heavenly Home with Jesus on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Calvary Fellowship Homes. Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, she was the wife of Walter Louis Almond, Jr., who predeceased her by just 2 days, 6 hours and 37 minutes. Her first husband, George Angus Sutherland passed away in June of 1986. She was the daughter of the late Paul Clayton Duncan, Sr. and Margaret Elmyra Mitchell Duncan. Helen was a loving wife, mother, and (great-great) grandmother. She graduated from Swatara High School in 1947, then Philadelphia Bible Institute in 1952, working as a secretary for several years doing general office work before being accepted to the China Inland Mission / Overseas Missionary Fellowship in 1958. She assisted their financial department stateside, where she married and began a family. She also managed and operated the mission’s mail order book department before retiring in 1989 upon her second marriage to another widowed missionary. They traveled across the country, living in several different states before settling into the retirement community where she volunteered her gift of piano playing and singing talents in weekly services over 2 decades. She also had a passion for reading and enjoyed crocheting. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth “Libby” Aulenbach of Mohnton, PA; stepdaughters, Rebecca A. Almond, of Kansas City, MO, and Betsy A. Walker of Hillsboro, KS; stepsons, Paul R. Almond, of Point Comfort, TX, and David L. Almond of Dallas, TX; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and multiple step (great and great-great) grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, two siblings, her grandson, Josiah G. Pieller, and her son, Paul D. Sutherland. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service in the Chapel of Calvary Homes, 502 Elizabeth Drive, Lancaster, PA 17601 on Monday, October 9, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Kevin Brown officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Calvary Homes, 502 Elizabeth Drive, Lancaster, PA 17601. The interment will be private.
