Henry Francis Myers III

Henry Francis Myers, III, age 89, passed away in Williamsburg, VA, on December 15, 2018. The devoted husband for 65 years of Martha Bodine Myers, he was a loving father to three children, Wendy (married to Vaughan Jones), Henry (married to Susan Myers) and Marc (married to Beth Myers). He was preceded in death by his son Marc, who died on November 15, 2018. He is survived by five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. His brother, John Barry Myers and sister, Elizabeth Myers Lewis, live in the Lancaster, Pennsylvania area. Henry was born on May 27, 1929 to Henry F. Myers, Jr. and Alice Barry Myers and grew up in Lancaster, PA. He graduated from The Phillips Exeter Academy, Princeton University (BA in History, 1951) and the University of Maryland (MA in Economics, 1957). Henry spent his career dedicated to journalism and was known for his dry sense of humor, keen eye, editing skills, rapid turnaround time and voluminous output. His first job was at the Lancaster New Era as a reporter and wire editor. He was later employed by The Wall Street Journal, where he worked in various roles spanning a 40-year career: Make-up Editor, National Copy Desk, Page One Editor, and Columnist (“Outlook” column). Henry and Martha raised their three children in Westfield, N.J. Henry was a member of the YMCA, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Westfield Tennis Club, Highland Swim Club and Echo Lake Country Club. He was an active volunteer with Boy Scout Troop 172 at The Presbyterian Church, where both of his sons earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a family man who enjoyed swimming, golf, hiking, tennis, camping, traveling and reading many newspapers. He was very involved with his children. He was also a handyman who built additions to his homes. In 1998, Henry and Martha moved to Williamsburg, VA, recently residing at The Williamsburg Landing. Henry was an active member of the Christopher Wren Association and enjoyed participating in the many events and courses at the College of William and Mary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17601. Burial Service will follow immediately at St. Mary's. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Williamsburg Heritage Humane Society (https://heritagehumane.org).
