Judith Cooper Eshleman

Judith Wills Cooper Eshleman died February 2, 2014 in the loving presence of her husband at Landis Homes. She died following complications from lymphoma. She was born on June 27, 1931 in Marlton, New Jersey, the daughter of David Evans Cooper and Elizabeth Haines Wills Cooper. She graduated from Haddonfield High School and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1952. She was the recipient of the Nightingale Award, given to the one graduating nurse who best exemplified the principles of professional nursing. She was employed by the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and became head nurse of the Neurology Department. She married Dr. S. Kendrick Eshleman III in July 1954. They moved to the Norristown State Hospital, where he was in psychiatric training, followed by two years in the Army Medical Corps, mostly in Fort Knox, Kentucky, where Judy was a volunteer driver for the Red Cross. They moved to Lancaster in 1959, where Dr. Eshleman established his psychiatric practice with her constant support. She was a member of the Auxiliary of the Lancaster City and County Medical Society and the Auxiliary of the former Saint Joseph Hospital. She also was a member of the Iris Club, the Junior League of Lancaster and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. She was named to the Roll of Honor for distinguished services to the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Pennsylvania in 2012 by the Lancaster-Dauphin-York Committee, of which she was a former Chairman. Judy was a former Trustee of the Lancaster Country Day School and a Director of Quest for Learning. She also was a member of the Cliosophic Society, the Herb Society of America and other groups. She enjoyed gardening, gourmet cooking, needlework, bird watching, and above all, helping others. She was a birthright member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Cropwell Meeting in New Jersey, and attended St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster, where she had been an active volunteer. She is survived by her husband, S. Kendrick Eshleman III, MD, their daughter, Diane Eshleman Djordjevic and her husband Milic, and granddaughter Tatiana, all of Severna Park, MD, a brother, Carlisle Cooper, and his wife Sally, of Venice, Florida, two nieces and several cousins, and was preceded in death by a brother, David E. Cooper, Jr. It is thought that her ancestors were involved in establishing the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, the Cooper Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, and had a family connection with William Penn. A Meeting for Worship on the occasion of the death of our Friend will take place at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at The Groffs Family Funeral and Cremation Service, 528 West Orange Street (corner of Pine and Orange) Lancaster, PA. The family will greet friends from 10:00 AM until the time of the meeting. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to All Saints Episcopal Cemetery Association, in care of Frank Caruthers, Treasurer, 1Bodine Road, Berwyn, PA 19312-1236. Interment will be private in All Saints Episcopal Cemetery in Paradise, PA.
