Livonia W. Eck, 78, passed away on Wednesday October 31, 2012 at Lancaster Regional Medical Center after an illness of 2 days. She was the wife of Timothy C. Eck, with whom she celebrated 13 years of marriage this past January 6th. Her first husband, Oliver J. Smith III, died in 1981. Born in Derby, CT, she was the daughter of the late Paul Dana and Florence Marion Young Westcott. Livy graduated from East High School, Rochester, NY and received her B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Rochester in 1956. She first worked for American Viscose Corporation, Marcus Hook, PA from 1956 to 1962. More recently she enjoyed working as an analytical chemist for Lancaster Laboratories Inc., Lancaster, retiring in 2000. One of her early interests was Ham Radio and in 1965 she became the first woman to bounce a radio signal off the moon, which she did from her backyard in Millersville. Other interests include rifle marksmanship, paleontology, mineralogy, entomology and gardening. An avid hiker she had been a member of the Lancaster Hiking Club where she was awarded Hiker of the Year for 1991. She and Tim shared Volunteer of the Year Award from Lancaster County Conservancy in 2009. She also participated in the Lancaster Senior Games winning several medals. Since her retirement she was a very active duplicate bridge player, recently obtaining her Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League as well as enjoying the company of all her fellow players. She also volunteered one day a week at the Lancaster Health Campus. In addition to her husband, Tim, she is survived by a daughter V. Blair Smith of Lansing, MI, a son Oliver J. Smith IV, and his wife Carolee, of New Tripoli, PA, and two grandsons Jacob E. Smith and Carter J. Smith. She is also survived by a sister, Eleanor Bailey, of Dexter, MI. Her sudden departure is a large loss for her family and friends who will miss her dearly. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Livy’s Celebration of Life Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 5, 2012 at The Groffs Family Funeral & Cremation Services, 528 W. Orange Street (at the corner of Orange & Pine Sts), Lancaster. The family will greet friends at The Groffs from 10:00 a.m. until time of Service. Private Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. If desired, Memorials may be made in Livy’s name to the charity of your choice.
