Nancy Darr

Nancy Jane “Nance” Flanders Darr died on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital surrounded by her family. Nancy Darr was the only child of Dale Pierce Flanders and Theresa Aubin Flanders. She was born on March 4, 1939, in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in the town of Newport. Most of her life was spent in Mechanicsburg, Shiremanstown, and Lancaster, PA. She remained an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Shiremanstown for over 45 years. Nancy was very athletic; she played field hockey, basketball, and softball all four years of her Mechanicsburg High School days. She was the captain of those sports her senior year and was voted the female athlete of her graduating class in 1957. She graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1961 from Millersville State Teacher’s College. She took graduate classes at Shippensburg State Teacher’s College and Penn State University. Nancy was hired by the Mechanicsburg Area School District for the 1961-62 school year. This was the first year of a thirty-six-year career with the Mechanicsburg School District. She was very active in the Mechanicsburg Education Association. Sports were still part of Nancy’s life away from school. She was a member of the Ladies Golf Team at Range End in Dillsburg, PA and Colonial Country Club in Harrisburg. Her other interests were bowling, traveling, watching sports on television, visiting casinos, playing golf, reading, and proudly showing pictures of her children and grandchildren. She will forever be remembered for the love and life she brought to all she met. There was never a child she met whom she didn’t love and respect. Nancy was predeceased by her daughter, Terri L. Moor in 2017, parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. She is survived by her partner, Julie Spangler of Lancaster, PA, having spent 34 years together, her son, Dr. Eric D. Darr, husband of Lauren B. Darr, Wyomissing, PA; son in law, Mikel Moor, Angola, Indiana, grandchildren Madeleine Darr, Liam Darr, Olivia J. Moor, Abby L. Phillips; and step grandchildren, Bailey Rothermel and Ryan Rothermel, her close friend, Susan Thorn, along with many other friends. A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Nance will be held at the Groff Family Funeral Home, 528 West Orange Street, Lancaster, PA 17603 on Friday, August 28, 2026 at 11:00 AM with Deacon Jan Davis officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the time of the service. The interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Wildcat Foundation at Mechanicsburg Area High School, wildcatfoundation.org where she always said, “I never met a kid I didn’t like.”
