Ned Charles Harms

Ned Charles Harms, 81, of Lancaster, went home to be with the Lord, with family by his side on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA. Born in Hastings, MI, he was the son of the late Everett Charles and Louvaughn McKimball Harms and loving husband of 57 years to Shirley Jean Harms. Ned graduated from Lakewood High School where he wrestled and after graduation attended Manchester College where he played football. He served his county in Europe during the Vietnam War through Brethren Volunteer Services as a 1W. He met Shirley while volunteering at the National Institute of Health in Washington D.C.. In 1969 they married,and in 1973, he and Shirley settled in Conestoga, PA to raise their family. Ned worked as a carpenter at Diller-Plank, and later worked for Penn Dot as a Project Manager, retiring in 2010. He attended Lampeter Church of the Brethren where he sang in the choir, was a youth group leader and served on the church Board. As a devoted Michigan State fan, he loved college football and college basketball. One of his favorite pastimes was playing croquet and card games with his family. Ned was a fixer, doer and builder. He built one of the first log cabins in the area and always had a building project going on. He and Shirley travelled on many great, unplanned road trips, listening to Motown or country music, and could be found on the dance floor at all weddings. Ned was a devoted grampy to his grandchildren taking them on all types of adventures. Later in life, Ned enjoyed playing pool with friends at his retirement village. Ned loved his family and in addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by his daughters: Courtney (David) Barry, Conestoga, and Kimberly (Bob) Garvey, Strasburg, grandchildren: Everett, Spencer, Bobby, Jack and Maggie, siblings: Judy, Ted and Carl. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Janet and Bob. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Nedʼs Memorial Service at Wesley United Methodist Church, 40 W. Main Street, Strasburg, PA on Friday, August 28, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Bob Garvey officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service.
