Carole LeFever

Surrounded by family and dear friends, Carole Lee LeFever’s unique spirit left this earth on Monday, May 20, 2013 after a five month, courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Bainbridge, MD, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Kenneth H. Heisey and Helen B. Heisey of St. Michaels, Maryland. Carole graduated from Harrisburg Academy High School and was the third generation of her family to graduate from Juniata College, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in history. After teaching history in Port Royal, PA, she earned another Bachelor’s Degree in Art from Millersville University. Carole was an infamously beloved art teacher and field hockey coach at Wheatland Junior High School for 33 years, retiring in 2004. A true philanthropist, Carole's passion for people and culture was so tenacious it sometimes got her into trouble. A defender of the underdog and fierce advocate of civil rights, she was once jailed for her beliefs at the race riots in York, PA and stood strong during the Native American tax riot in New York State. She was closely involved with the Iroquois nation in New York State and the Navaho nation in the southwestern U.S., where she had many valued friends. Carole’s mission to help the less fortunate led her to the Ivory Coast in Africa, where, in times of dangerous political upheaval, she conducted agricultural missions and donated computers. An avid gardener, Carole organized the Demuth Plant Sale, a fundraiser for the Demuth Museum since its inception. At the time of her diagnosis she was helping to develop a memorial for African American war veterans with Crispus Attucks in Lancaster, PA. She dedicated the last decade of her life to the support of her mother and care of her family's Eastern Shore home at Misty Point. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her son Alexander R. LeFever and grandson Xavier M. LeFevre of Lancaster, PA, a brother, David husband of Nikki Heisey of Harrisburg, PA, and a sister, Beth, wife of William Reidel of Falston, MD. She was lovingly cared for in the last months of her life by Jeff and Vanessa LeFevre along with close family and friends. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Carole’s Celebration of Life Memorial Service on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at The Groffs Family Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 528 W. Orange Street (corner of Orange and Pine Streets), Lancaster with Reverend Louis A. Butcher, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. A private family interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery and Carole’s remains will be scattered in places around the world with which she had a special connection.
