Jane M. Longwell

Jane M. Longwell, 98, of Lancaster, PA, died on Monday, April 30, 2018 at Homestead Village. Born in Dayton, PA she was the daughter of her loving parents, the late Samuel and Emma McHenry and the wife of her devoted husband, the late Dr. Robert H. Longwell who she was married to for 54 years. Growing up in a small town, Jane was influenced by her church to pursue a career to better the lives of children. She earned a degree in Early Childhood Education from the Maryland College for Women. She married and then went on to teach kindergarten in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Dr. Longwell’s medical practice brought the couple to Lancaster and their beloved home on Melody Lane. Jane and Bob were members of the Bethany Presbyterian Church and later Highland Presbyterian Church. Jane had the honor of being a Deacon and Elder of the church. Jane was President of the Women’s Auxiliary for the Lancaster Medical Society and spearheaded the Red Rose Day Fundraiser. She was also a member of P.E.O. Jane enjoyed golf at the Overlook Golf Course and the Lancaster Country Club and time with friends at the Iris Club. Jane loved bridge, travel and ‘the little creatures without words.’ She also enjoyed cooking and entertaining. Jane will be remembered by her friends as someone who lived a life of gratitude and strength and joy. She is survived by a son, Robert McHenry Longwell and his wife, Anne of Florida, six grandchildren: William Longwell, David Longwell, Melissa Longwell Bilbro, Sarah Longwell, Timothy Longwell and Jennifer Longwell. She was preceded in death by her son, Samuel H. Longwell, who passed in 2013 and siblings: Samuel Dickson McHenry, William Harrison McHenry, Helen Marie McHenry Posey and Mary Louis McHenry. She will be sorely missed by many of her beloved nieces and nephews, all part of a close-knit clan. A memorial service will be held at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, PA on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. with Dr. Roger Rabey officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until time of service.
